On Words

"One of the bad things you can do to your writing is to dress up the vocabulary, looing for long words because you're ... ashamed of your short ones" -Stephen King

What does the Wind have to do with Writing?

If I could stand again upon that grassy hill, or out in a field, bare of wheat, I’d summon the wind and listen closely as it sang to me its ancient melodies. The hog-wire fence strung from post to post in a pasture nearby haunts me with its eerie tune, as fickle winds blow this way and that.

If I could stand again next to that giant, wind-torn cedar, clinging to its rocky ledge overlooking the ocean—whipped into a roiling dither by fierce, faraway winds, or stand once more under whispering pines while a gentle breeze sings softly to the shimmering lake it shelters, I’d listen and hum a tune in harmony with its song.

The morning sun touches my soul and fills it with need, my heart with inspiration. The wind, strong and fierce or gentle as a baby’s breath mildly caressing my skin, fills me with the desire to express myself through the magic of storytelling.
--DBB
